about
Written : Dec 2009 – Jan 2010
2009 was a terrible year for me – my annus horribilis. At the beginning of 2010 I had started thinking that perhaps music was my path to take and making plans to go forward with the music.
The song is an expression of two parts – the year before and the current year. The year before was a bad year, the current year being the year of hope.
A good friend of mine – Jim Harrold – came over one day as I wanted a lead solo that was different from the ones I had written (which were starting to sound samey to me). I hadn’t realised he could play lead solo as until that time we had jammed a couple of times on the acoustics.
However, he picked up the guitar, whacked the amp up to 11, and started playing to the backing track I had made of the song. He started playing the solos, and I would say “That one there – that can go at the beginning, that one to the middle that one number four etc.
After about 10 minutes we had the basics of what is now the lead solo. It was then a matter of making sure the pieces went in the right order. After probably a further 15 minutes of practising the solo so it was in the right sequence, we recorded it in two takes.
I was amazed – not only at the rapidity of it and Jims guitar playing genius – a very good talent and he should seriously consider changing direction, but the sheer beauty of the solo – it sounds fantastic – even though I say so myself.
Update: June 2016 Jim sadly passed away do this lead solo is even more poignant or me now.

Lyrics
Verse 1
Last year, was the worst of my life
No I wasn’t broken hearted, I just had no fight
Darkness all around me
The walls were closing in
Verse 2
A struggle a real sense of doom
No spark of inspiration to light up the room
The tunnel getting longer,
The light fading away
Chorus
Well I'm gonna hit the road and head up on the highway
Like Sinatra gonna do it my way
Step out of the dark and step into the sunlight
Out of the dark and step into the sunlight
Verse 3
No matter, how hard I tried
Kept running up that hill and down I would slide
A deep sense of frustration
As my efforts came undone
Chorus
Well I'm gonna hit the road and head up on the highway
Like Sinatra gonna do it my way
Step out of the dark and step into the sunlight
Out of the dark and step into the sunlight
Verse 4
This year, hope came with a bang
There’s only one person can change where I am
The tunnel getting shorter,
The bailiffs torch is out
Chorus
Well I'm gonna hit the road and head up on the highway
Like Sinatra gonna do it my way
Step out of the dark and step into the sunlight
Out of the dark and step into the sunlight
