about
Written : November 2011
This is a song inspired about someone and written in the third party. I used experience of something that had happened to me in the past as a reference. Just before going into the studio to record the first iteration of the album, with Producer, Sean Cronin and with Bob Skeat (Bass) and Muddy Manninen (Lead Guitar) of Wishbone Ash, I went away on holiday to Spain with my cousin. She was having a rough time with their then partner. On our first night in Spain I took her to a Jam night fronted by the band of my Ex Drummer, Luis. They met and she fell in “lust” with him. But Luis was always surrounded by women and she got the hump about it.
Next night I had arranged for Luis’s band to play at my local restaurant out there, “Spinach”. My cousin and I were performing and it was better with a band. That night she blanked Luis, who didn’t have his usual entourage with him. So Luis made a real play for my cousin. Later we had an after show party at my apartment where they spent all night talking in a mix of French, Spanish and English, not to mention lots of sign language. Whatever it was it worked because they headed off to the four poster bed together and stayed there all night.
Next morning, I woke early amid a floor full of snoring people who’d stayed over that night. I went and sat on the terrace of my apartment with my trusty guitar in hand and started playing with a little riff on the guitar. After a while I started writing some lyrics about what had happened between them as if I was her (Now EX) partner and the song behind those lies was born. When the two of them arose the song was already written. I said to her “What do you think of this” and played it to her. She realised after a few lines it was about her and said “I like it but don’t ever play it in front of XXXXX” (her partner at the time)
Whilst describing it to producer Sean Cronin, I mentioned I had written a new song and it had a really cheeky beat – the name stuck and it was the unofficial name for the song. That title is now incorporated into the official title of the song –Behind Those Lies (Cheeky beat), which encapsulates the upbeat feel.
The song is a bit if a contradiction because although it tells of a sad story it does so with a happy theme – and it just works.
When we were recording it in the studio, none of the band had heard the song previously I had only written the song 3 days previously. After recording all the other songs, the producer asked us to go through Cheeky Beat. We did so and it was a perfect take first time.

Lyrics
Verse 1
There’s something, That you want to say
I know you, I know your way
Tell me, Get it off your chest
Honesty, Its always best
Chorus
Something you’re not telling me,
A face you can’t disguise
Tell me what’s the matter babe
I know the truth is hidden
Behind those lies x4
Verse 2
You went away, You had your fun
A secret place, You met someone
You’re suffering, With guilt so bad
I hate to see you, Be so sad
Chorus
Something you’re not telling me,
A face you can’t disguise
Tell me what’s the matter babe
I know the truth is hidden
Behind those lies x4
Refrain
I look into your face,
I see where I’ve gone wrong
You were once my princess
That time seems so long gone
Verse 3
It’s not too late, Tell me now
We were so strong, We'll get by somehow
I know the blame, But it’s not just me
Please tell the truth, And Ill set you free
Chorus
Something you’re not telling me,
A face you can’t disguise
Tell me what’s the matter babe
I know the truth is hidden
Behind those lies x 8
